Always Together Whatever

I am ten may be younger
It is Sunday
The day you call
Every week about 6pm to see how my week has gone
You don’t say much,
I do all the talking, I tell you about the rows we have had, who loves who this week.
You just listen, you have always been good at listening.

It’s midweek I am still only about ten
My weekly letter arrives,
Asking me how I am
Telling me about your work and what you have done
Always saying hello to mum and dad
Telling me when you will be next home.

It’s a Saturday, I’m a little older now
And have come to stay over night
We are staying above the pub at the hotel where you work.
I don’t like the dark so we fall asleep in the same bed
Watching TV, the window open.
You have white curtains with bright pink patterns on.

I am eighteen,
I am collecting my A-Level results today,
You are going on holiday.
But you still call, to see how I have done.
I haven’t done well, I am crying and I can hear T calling you.
You tell me it will be fine and that I will still be able to go to uni
You are right.

I am 20 years old.
I am moving back to uni for my last year,
You are moving my things with me.
You are three months pregnant, but you don’t say
You still carry things you shouldn’t, to help me move.

I am 27 years old.
I call at 11pm out of the blue,
I am pregnant, you are the first I tell.
I know Dad will go mad, for three months you see me through.

I am 27 years old and 10 months
I have given birth to Baba you are the first to be called,
You are the first to see him.
You are the only one who asks what I need.
You are my sister!

My sister is 14 years older than me, she left home when I was 7. So I have spent the larger part of my life, living apart from my sister. But it has never affected how close we are!

Thank you, we do have a good relationship. But I think that is from my mum, she was an only child and made a big thing about our special relationship as sisters so I think that we have always felt grateful for that relationship and if we don’t agree with things we get over it quickly.

What a beautiful relationship! I always wanted a sister for that kind of closeness. I’m rediscovering it in my girl friends but what you write about it something very special.

That’s lovely. It was the other way round for me. I am seven years older than my little sister and I was always leaving school just as she was starting, wrote to her from university, she was the first person I told when I was pregnant.

    What a lovely relationship.

Oh my goodness, you made me cry. So lovely. I have a sister who is 18 years and 10 days younger than me so this really resonated. Unfortunately she is going through an exceptionally “stroppy” teenager period at the moment and hasn’t spoken to me for nearly a year. Its very sad.
